Hey, friends~ I hope you’ve all sufficiently recovered from Easter at Avalon. It was a lot of work from everyone and I was really pleased with the event. Yay!

Anyway, our regular gatherings resume this Wednesday, the 18th, 7pm-9pm. We’ll be meeting at St Mark’s in the Bowery, a pretty radical (and historic) church on 10th St and 2nd Ave.

The service will deal with issues of space and sacredness: so far, we’ve met in people’s homes, in a dance club, and (now) a church. Are any of these spaces more holy than the others? What does sacred space mean? What is our relationship to space as New Yorkers? What makes something holy to us? It’ll be pretty cool.

We’ll also be discussing some logistics. Here are some things we’ll be discussing: Are we happy meeting twice a month or do we want to gather every week? Is St Mark’s as a location a good fit for us? How do we feel about meeting in a church? Do we want to always gather in the same location, or do we want to continue couch-surfing? Do we want to alternate between an uptown and a downtown location?

see you Wednesday,
isaac

Hey, I want to second Bowie’s thank you to everyone who came out last night. Also, if you haven’t seen it yet, you should pick up a copy of Metro NY today (Monday) – there’s a big article on us on page 4! You can also read it online here . The online version, however, doesn’t have the pictures or this juicy quote:

“I grew up in the church and this is very different. It’s at another extreme. A lot of people aren’t comfortable going to church. This is more of a safe space to be yourself. It’s making it more real.” (Audience member Lena Lasarzewaki).

Also, thanks to uncoolkids.com who ran a listing of the event along with the scariest Easter bunny ever:

Bethesda Transmission

March 27, 2007

the pool

Hey guys! This is your reminder that we’ll be having Transmission tomorrow night, Wednesday the 28th. This week Paul Grenier, our very own Tiresias, will be leading us in a meditation based on the pool of Bethesda. Paul’s treatment of healing stories is always exceptional – this is not one to be missed.

Unfortunately our usual gracious hostess, Bowie, will be out of town this week so we’ll be having services at Union instead (where Paul and I both live). It’s only a few blocks away from Bowie’s so it shouldn’t kill anyone to get here. Union is located at 121st and Broadway – closest stops would be 116th on the 1 train or 125th on the A/B/C/D. If you want to hopstop it, the address is 3041 Broadway, NY, NY, 10027.

There’s some big news you guys should be aware of. First of all, if you haven’t checked out the article about us on the Sojourners website (Jim Wallis’s magazine), go look at www.sojo.net Secondly, Time Out New York will be running a piece on us next week, which is fabulous.

We also have our postcards made up, so if you want some make sure to let me know! I’ve got scads.

hope to see you all tomorrow!

Death of a Mascot

March 21, 2007

wild turkey A church in Michigan apparantly had a wild turkey attend services on its own volition for over a year until last week when it was run over by a car.  The church, of course, is holding a memorial service.

So far, everyone at Transmission is human-identified, but we should remember to keep our options open.¬† If we ever start an evangelism campaign we shouldn’t overlook that smelly live poultry warehouse down the street from Bowie’s apartment…

So Easter is only three weeks away. We’re half way there! Yikes…

Anyway, this Wednesday we’ll be having our next planning meeting at 7pm. This week we’ll be meeting at St Clement’s Church in their parish hall (we’ll get there early and put up signs so you can find us).

St Clement’s is at 423 W 46th, bet 9th and 10th ave.

Main things to discuss:
~music. We’ve got a rock solid band put together and need to decide how to use them.
~postcards. We’ve got postcards to distribute! Check out the designs here.
~a slew of other things. Plus special guests!

Hope to see you there!

Yay! Hadassah Hill (www.heelsonwheelsdesign.com) designed these fabulous postcards for us. They’re at the printers right now and we’re expecting a couple thousand to arrive on Tuesday. Please let us know if you’d like a pile to pass out.

Please also feel free to post this image on your blog, myspace page, or website. If you click on the image above, you’ll be taken to a flickr.com page where you can download it in various dimensions (or grab html code to do the work). I’ve also posted the postcard back for ya’ll to check out or post, if you prefer. Thanks!

The Sweet Desert

And sometimes, Lord
it must have been
good to go without
to leave the friends
and streets you knew
to lay your burdens down
and wander in the sweet desert
where nothing makes a sound
