hey ya’ll -

here’s my plan for the worship component of the first house church next Wednesday, Oct 11th. I’ve love to hear your thoughts and input. if you’re interested in coming, please rsvp to epiphany.ny@gmail.com

life o’ Jesus

birth -
tunes - A Spaceman Came Traveling, Chris de Burgh
pass around icons of baby jesus & nativity sets

life -
participants share stories about the life of Jesus, what did Jesus do? what stories have stuck with you? an exercise in listening and teaching, plus, letting Jesus into your heart, yo.

death -
tunes - Just Another Poor Boy, Chris de Burgh
pass around crucifixes from various traditions

note on CdeB - wrote the hit song, The Lady in Red; has released about 20 albums; has written some rockin’ and epic Christian songs through the years - about everything from the birth of JC to the Crusades, from the death of Jesus from the perspective of Mary M to a trilogy about the apocalypse. weird dude, but brilliant, sincere, and fun. I was introduced to C de B by my former roommate, a Socialist Jewish Lesbian Canadian (now that lefty for you!) who loved Chris as a teenage girl growing up in Calvary!

  3. NM - The “Lady in Red” guy. Found him on iTunes. However “Just another Poor Boy” isn’t on there. (FYI)

  4. Hi Renata -

It was good to meet you on Sunday night at Sanctuary.

I got these lyrics from http://www.cdeb.com. A Spaceman Came Traveling is there too (plus some audio for both).

    Blessings, Bowie

    Just Another Poor Boy
From Spanish Train and Other Stories
    by Chris de Burgh

    Year Released: 1975

    Playing Time: 4:46

He was but a traveller on the lonely road of life,
She, her name was Mary, A lady of the night,
She found him lying in that road, on a winter’s night so cold,
    Just another poor boy, treat him right;

She saw that he was hungry and gave him food to eat,
She knew that he was weary and he had no place to sleep,
She took him home to her own bed, she lay down his wounded head,
And washed away the world from his hands and his feet,

He was just another poor boy, Just another poor boy,
When he cried out in his sleep she held him tight,
Just another poor boy, Just another poor boy,
And she gave him love and comfort through the night,
    Till the morning’s light…

At night she sat beside him, by the fire he would talk,
He said all men were brothers and that love could conquer all,
Many gathered round to hear, many for his life did fear,
In troubled times like these men seldom talked.

Oh they came for him one morning at the breaking of the day,
She woke to hear him calling as they carried him away,
Accusing him of spreading lies and hate,

His public meetings were a danger to the state,
Some soldier said “Who was he anyway?”

Just another poor boy, Just another poor boy,
And the tears were falling from her face like rain,
Just another poor boy, Just another poor boy,
And they hung him on a hillside far away,
And on the ground she lay…Poor boy…Oh my Lord…
    Oh my Lord…Oh my Lord…

Just another poor boy, Just another poor boy,
And the tears were falling from her face like rain,
Just another poor boy, Just another poor boy,
And they hung him on a hillside far away, just another poor boy,
Just another poor boy, Just another poor boy,
And she never dreamed she’d see his face again…

  5. Just, a thought - if you want to a have a third song for the “life of Jesus” bit, you could either use The Temple from Jesus Christ Superstar or Ministration from Rotation…

Unfortunately, there’s kind of a dearth of music about Jesus’s life - people are much more interested in talking about his birth and death. Hmm, maybe John and I will have to change that with our next album…

  6. The Rebel Jesus (interesting song even if it’s not to do with His life):

Ok the closest I could find in my collection thus far:
    Omega by The Wedding Party:

My children, we’re running out of time
    My children, hear my cry

    And I want you
And I need you, my children
    Come and know my love
    Come and know my Son
I am who was and is and is to come
I am who was and is and is to come

My children, why won’t you come?
You’re my children, so why won’t you come?

My children, I gave you my Son
My children, He gave you His blood

    And I want you
And I need you, my children
    Come and know my love
    Come and know my Son
I am who was and is and is to come
I am who was and is and is to come

My children, we’re running out of time
My children, he’s coming for His Bride

    “My children . . .”

  7. Also, what specifically are we going to talk about? Just his life? Or are we going to dig deeper into various aspects of his life? I mean there is so much to explore and to question about the very human and very divine personhood of Jesus.

Also, Bowie, do you have wireless?

  8. Stepping away from the bible for a moment I am struck with the similarity of (I think) Renaissance period churches and thier use of imagery to teach the people who are (mostly) illiterate. Hence where we get all the images of Christianity from. Which is also interesting for me from the perspective of a designer who is looking into the use of imagery as means of visual communication both in business and outside of it.
